QuickReef™ is a patent-pending living shoreline material that is made from a proprietary mixture of natural calcium carbonate materials, such as oyster shell and limestone marl, cemented together. Comprised primarily of native coastal materials, QuickReef™ provides an ideal substrate for oyster recruitment and aquatic environment enhancement. QuickReef™ units are arranged in the shallow waters of the intertidal zone in an configuration that attenuates wave energy, encourages marsh accretion behind the structure, and creates aquatic habitat within the structure. In higher energy settings, the structure can also be bound together to create an articulating system. Over time, QuickReef™ living shorelines can naturally grow with sea level rise and provide resilient protection for your shoreline.
QuickReef™ is currently available in a low-to-moderate energy version for short fetch estuarine areas and a moderate-to-high energy version for longer fetch sites. Custom configurations are also available. While QuickReef™ units provide an excellent base for native oyster recruitment and can be colonized quickly in areas with high salinity and high oyster spat, they do not rely on colonization for stability. This makes QuickReef™ an excellent living shoreline option for brackish coastal areas without native oyster populations as well as traditional living shoreline sites in saltier water.
